UK Government consultation on same-sex civil marriage

The UK government has started a 3-month consultation on the subject of same-sex civil marriage. It is soliciting people's comments on the subject, and there is a website where you can register comments.

I would urge any of you who are British citizens and who wish to make comments on the subject to go to that website. It will take only a few minutes, but may mean that eventually HWMBO and I will be truly married in the eyes of the state.

I had dinner on Tuesday with a priest friend I won't name as this is a public forum. The subject of gay marriage came up. He expressed surprise that the Southwark bishop supported last week's pastoral letter and added that the Church shouldn't be meddling in affairs of state. He echoed my long held belief that marriage has long existed as an institution outside the church; it is the church's business to define what they might consider sacramental marriage but none of the church's business to dictate how the state or society might define marriage. Of course, this is the same priest that got into hot water when he blessed a lesbian couple.

If religious types are so concerned about the sanctity of marriage, I wish they'd turn their attention to the real problem, high divorce rates, and stop trying to cause people misery for wanting to experience monogamous love. And I hope that soon the state will recognise you, as I already do, as married.
