There has been a lot of ink (electronic and actual) expended on the iPad. Most of it centres on using one for fun. Not many talk about practical uses for them, except for this one. I almost wish I could do something like this at home here.

so he's using an iPad to remotely set his coffee grinder to "fine" or "coarse", and turn lights on?

Piffle. Those devices I have all have on/off switches and controls on them. It's not at all difficult to use my fingers to turn things on or off. I don't need an iPad, or anything else, to help me do that.

It's the joy of being able to do these things without being close to or even in the same room as, the item in question.

For example, I would be happy to be able to answer my doorphone from upstairs, open the door remotely, and turn on the back door light occasionally if I hear suspicious sounds from the back garden (I've scared at least one set of burglars away in the past, but only by going downstairs).

Yes, I could do all these things if my landlord deigned to rewire the maisonnette. It would be nicer to simply place controls in each appliance or switch so that I could do it wherever I was in the house or even the world (through the magic of WiFi).

To each his own, I suppose.
