We woke up remarkably well, although I had trouble sleeping. I refuse to think that one pint of perry and a thimbleful of madeira would disturb my sleep that much.

We're off to the Thai restaurant at Kilburn later on (hope it's open) and then perhaps a walk through Hampstead Heath to finish. More chicken stew for dinner tonight.

USans are probably inundated with American football today. New Year's Day is very quiet in the UK. Other than being cold and grey, it's just a normal Bank Holiday. The country won't really rebound from the Christmas/New Year's break until Monday next, when we will plunge yet again into what commerce is left to us.

Where in Kilburn is this Thai restaurant. As I'm basically adjoining Kilburn (1 stop on the Tube or 15 minute walk), I'd be interested in checking it out some time.

It is closer to Kilburn High Road station. I can't remember which cross-street it's closest to, but perhaps when we next go (we decided not to go yesterday) we can meet you there and have lunch or dinner.

Ah, okay, that's more like a 30-minute walk. There's a church in the area, on Quex Road, that I occasionally go to, and a nice bookstore across from the station, but I don't know the Thai place. It would be nice to check it out sometime.

Yes, of the college variety. The pros are in playoffs and will hold off for the weekend.

But gmjambear and I have the CBC on and are watching the second annual hockey Winter Classic, with the Detroit Red Wings vs. the Chicago Blackhawks on a rink set up between 1st and 3rd bases at Wrigley Field. A Blackhawks fan was just shown on the broadcast with a banner reading "Best Use of Wrigley Field in Over 100 Years!" ;-)

hehehe...I lived relatively close to Wrigley Field when I lived in Chicago, and I would be very pleased if the Cubs finally won the Series.

It may not have been the al-kee-holl which kept you awake, but rather indigestion. I absolutely adore champagn and Benedictine (my fave!), but taken too late at night and I get a teensy big acidic....which can keep me awake.

Let me start out with cider, as it exists in the UK. Cider is a beer-like beverage made from apples, not grain.

A particularly odd type of perry is Babycham (http://www.babycham.com/flash/welcome.html), which has a very chequered past. The brand I was drinking is Kopparberg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kopparberg), which seems to be the most famous perry in the world.
