It's done!

I posted my absentee ballot this afternoon. Went to the Post Office on the Walworth Road and waited 15 minutes in a queue to get the thing weighed and £1.22 of postage put on it.

Feel satisfied, though. I have now done my civic duty.

California clearly has its act more together than Massachusetts! I was told that the ballots don't even arrive until mid-October, but that one will be mailed to me as soon as they get them. I expressed my concern, citing what happened with my primary election ballot, but they assured me it wouldn't be a problem, as they have hundreds of other voters in the UK. Somehow, I'm not filled with confidence, and I'm glad I don't live in a state where my vote is likely to make a difference.

California, enlightened state that it is, has something called a perpetual absentee ballot. Those of us who are living permanently overseas, or who are always unable to get to a polling station (through disability, for example) can apply for this ballot. They then send you a ballot for every election for which you qualify until you say to stop.

I have one of these. The ballots just turn up.

I may have to reapply after this election; I have to check that. However, it's really worth it. Too bad you didn't register in San Diego before you moved here.

The issue isn't that the ballot wouldn't have been sent if I hadn't called. (Well, it might not have been, though they had me registered on absentee status at my old NW6 address.) It's that they don't have the actual ballots yet, so they haven't been able to send them to any absentee voter.

I understood that. It seems silly that they have such a late date for the ballots to be printed. Literally the week after the last convention the California ballots were printed and on their way.

Thanks. I like being able to vote the bastards out in two countries.
