If you've ever had an iPhone (or other phone) stolen, you'll appreciate this blog post detailing how an iPhone owner tracked down his phone after the theft. I found it riveting, and I think I shall get MobileMe to ensure that should such a thing happen to my iPhone, it will be traced.

A friend sent me an email with the address of his office in it and an invitation to lunch. Normally I would have laboriously re-typed it into the iPhone calendar. It then occurred to me that if I opened Google Calendar, cut-and-pasted the address into that, added the name of my friend and the time of the appointment, it would sync into my iPhone without my having to type much of anything. I did a Patrick Stewart and said, "Make it so" and it did.

Now this is a "Doh!" moment for me, but I will now be doing a lot more of it. While I've gotten good at the iPhone's keyboard, not having to type anything in particular and do everything on my desktop is cool. As a relative oldster as far as this kind of stuff is concerned, I sometimes don't make the connections I should. Once I do, though, I just run with it.

I have successfully synched my iPhone contacts list and some of my calendar entries from Google. This is a great relief, although it looks like lots of my calendar entries (for various Google reasons beyond my ken) have not made it over. So I shall be transferring them tomorrow from the BlackBerry manually.

I am getting the hang of the keyboard. I have most trouble with m/n and i/o/p, it seems. More practice is necessary. Otherwise, I like the onscreen keyboard and it seems to work well (and pretty fast) for me.

Not so happy with predictive texting. I was trying to write "St Mary's" in a calendar entry and all I was getting was "As Mary's". Figured out how to get rid of particular predictive text entries on screen so that's not now a problem.

I have deliberately not used the manual. While as a support person I was always saying "RTFM" (Read that fine manual) and thinking "RTFM" (read the f**king manual) I decided that, if the iPhone interface was as intuitive as has been noised around, I should be able to figure it out for myself after seeing [livejournal.com profile] dangtri do it. I got the enlarging web pages by drawing two fingers apart intuitively, it seems. Just came naturally. Quite odd, really.

So, more work tomorrow. Still no PAC numbers. HWMBO and I keep getting phone calls from Vodafone. He refers them to me, and when they call me, they don't say anything or I can't hear what they're saying (got one tonight like that). I'd better get those numbers soon.

I called Vodafone today to get PACs for our two mobile phones so that I can change to O2 and get (a) an iPhone, and (b) fast broadband. Sarah from Vodafone made a half-hearted attempt to interest me in a Blackberry Curve, but after the problems I've had with my current Blackberry, I wasn't interested. I should get the two PACs within 3-5 working days, and then the fun begins.

I will also need a MAC from BT to migrate my broadband over. I think I should call them and get that sent over (they're all good for a month, I gather) so that I can do the whole shebang at once. The want me to call and talk to someone, so I fear they'll try to put the hard sell on me. O2 says they can give me up to 16Mb download, while BT only gives me up to 8Mb, and that is sometimes slow.

My Vodafone contract is up on May 3rd, so that's the target date.

One does feel like one is cheating on a spouse when one changes telephone or broadband providers. I shouldn't, but I've been with BT ever since I was only getting dialup 512kb and with Vodafone for over 10 years. But, all good things come to an end, hopefully for better things to come.
