I went to Columbia (1970-74) and graduated (just) with a BA in Latin and Greek. As Columbia gets somewhere around 39,000 applications each year, it can't meet each and every applicant officially. So, they ask alumni to interview some of these applicants and report to the Admissions Office.

I have interviewed three London prospects so far during this admissions cycle, with one getting in late last year on early admissions. I have two more interviews, one tomorrow, and one Tuesday. I will report on them to New York next week, and my report will form part of the decision process for their admission to Columbia.

Last year I interviewed two, neither of whom were accepted. However, one of them keeps in touch and we occasionally go out to lunch and discuss economics, politics, and philosophy. I suppose he really should have gotten in. But the London School of Economics seems to be doing a good job by him.
