...and that is our New Year's Eve. At 11 we'll move to the BBC 1 New Year's Eve countdown, and I may get us out some cheese and crackers and a drink each.

If history is any guide, we will be heading to bed at around 12:15 am New Year's morning. This is OK. We are evading the amateur drinkers who come out on New Year's Eve, get tanked on lots of lager, then vomit all over your shoes, the streets, themselves, and whatever can't get out of the way. It's also almighty cold out there, whereas it's warm in here. Oh, and perry is really really good: had a pint of it with my chicken stew tonight and it was really lovely. HWMBO will probably ban it from the house because I said that I could easily get addicted to it.

So, a Happy New Year to you all, and I hope that 2009 doesn't turn out as bad as everyone else seems to think it will.

We used to be able to get a good, cheap (under a buck) perry here a few decades ago. It was called Ripple and was slightly bubbly. It was my introduction to pear wines or, really, to non-grape wines. That later led to my making wines of other fruits ranging from cranberries (my tranquilizer wine) to the cashew fruit the Panamanians call marañon. Derek has even made an excellent wine from jalapeños.

Is perry what Ripple was based on? Geez, we used to get drunk on that when I was in high school in the late 1960's.

There is a brand of perry here called "Babycham" which young women who want to get drunk quickly but who don't like lager drink. I think it's vile--much too sweet. The brand that I drank, called Kopparbergs, is not too sweet.

Yes, Ripple was a perry. It vanished suddenly and nobody seems to know why.

It's like mead. Too many are excessively sweet, particularly those from Scandinavian countries, but I have found some dry meads from Britain that are flavorful and pleasant to drink.

U too. Don't forget to wear your kilt on New Year's Day as it's the big holiday in Scotland (not Christmas).

It didn't get lower than -1.2 in my back garden and we didn't have any snow. It was a bit warmer yesterday and today, once the cloud clears, may be warmer still!

See you Thursday!
