I have a VPN proxy...
May. 10th, 2008 12:14 am... and I have a question about it. Is there any way to "install" it on my router rather than on my computer? That way I could use my internet radio on stations in the USA which bar reception outside of the US. Currently I use it on my computer by clicking on the icon and letting it start up. "Install" might not be the right word...
I'm not very bright about such things, but if I could do that it would be an advantage for me.

Date: 2008-05-16 02:07 am (UTC)It is possible. There are routers that will do that, but they ain't cheap. (Mine cost me about $200.)
The other problem is that your ISP may block the ports needed rendering your VPN useless. (Like mine did.)
If you really want to go that route, you can leave a computer running at home, travel with a laptop and using "Hamachi" which will let you connect up to your home machine, then you can use Remote Desktop or some such.
I think for what you wanna do, Hamachi is your best bet. I haven't used it, but it sounds like it'll do exactly what you want. :)

Date: 2008-05-16 02:55 am (UTC)What should I be looking for in routers when I examine their specs? I'm happy to pay $200 (or £100) for a router that would do this.
I don't need it on the road, really. What I want to do is connect up my Internet radio so that it will go through the VPN here at home. That way I can listen on the Internet radio to WNUA, KKSF, and other US radio stations that block their streaming audio to non-USan IP addresses (my VPN has a US IP address so when I connect up through that I can listen). At the moment I have to listen to them in my study, but I would like to listen in the living room over the Internet radio instead.
