He's been denied the right to withdraw his guilty plea, but he says that nonetheless he'll stay around until the end of his term, when he'll retire from the Senate.

Oh, goodie! He'll be around to torment the Republicans for months to come through the 2008 general election. O frabjous day! Calloo, callay! he chortled in his joy. No vorpal blade is needed.

And it may be that he doesn't even honor his pledge to not seek re-election. But even if he does, wow, for the Democrats to get to run against an open seat instead of an interim Republican senator is a tremendous boost.

Still, when one puts aside the partisan strategic implications, my heart is breaking even for this man. He is so far away from being well that he doesn't even see the right way to go, and he doesn't seem to have a single strand of support left behind him. I wish that it was his policies going through this unrecoverable train wreck instead of him.

AGreed, he needs help desperately. Entrapment is not a good thing to do. But he's been a serial "offender" and seemingly likes the thrill of the toilet "chase".

Let's hope that he gets the help he needs and that the toilet stall remodelling that's going on in Minneapolis right now makes it less likely that people will be able to tap or take that wide stance, so that entrapment won't be used there again.
