2 years ago our boat in the Las Piedras river in the amazon basin area of Peru ran aground and we all had to get out to help free the boat from the sandbar - we were warned not to pee while in the water because of this little fish, and you can bet I didn't!
I remember being warned about this once while swimming in a river in Panamá Of course, I think the guys was just trying to scare us, as i don't think the candiru live outside of the Amazon.
