Well, I know. I cost USD 85.83, to the penny, and the receipts prove it. The average weekly wage was about USD 67, so I cost a little more than a week's wage.

The deposit receipt:

The final bill (while it isn't marked paid, I hope it was; if they charged 7.5% interest on the outstanding balance it would be USD 3,503 today):

Well, I did a Google search on something like "Cost of living in 1952 in the United States" and found a site that gives such retro statistics.

If you want to read about my journey here, look at my website (http://www.christianphansen.com) and follow the links to "About me".

I think that the next security innovation for travel will be to travel naked (after a thorough body cavity search) wearing only flipflops issued by the government. OK for the young nubile men, but people like me won't like it one bit.

Oh dear. Well, I'm not likely to enjoy parading around naked in flipflops unless all the young men are bear-chasers!

What is a vanity mirror?

I've lived here for 12 years and this is my home. I am a dual British/US citizen (read the website and you'll find out everything!)

I added you to my Yahoo Messenger contact list by the way, if you still use that. Easier to chat there than using lj...
