Today's police log is a bit strange, but has that flavour of mild eccentricity which has always been not only tolerated, but accepted in Marblehead, the town which was reputedly founded by a man who lived in a barrel on the beach for a while.

Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2011.

12:04 a.m. Caller reported handicap placard was stolen sometime last week while vehicle was parked in front of Salem Five Bank on Pleasant Street.
4:28 a.m. Salem Police asked officers in the area to be on the lookout for suspect in domestic assault and battery case that had occurred 40 minutes earlier.
7:46 a.m. Strange man wearing bathrobe with his feet taped up reported walking inbound on Pleasant Street just past Smith Street. It was actually a woman, who talked about Cirque du Soleil and architecture with officer, as well as Gloucester and Boston. Officer could not get name of woman, who also talked about being videotaped by police. Beverly Police reported speaking to her two days earlier and reported she “had not been a bother to anyone” but also refused to give them any information. Area agencies were unfamiliar with her. Mistaken identity, indeed. I presume that Beverly Police had nothing to say about her for fear that if they said anything, Marblehead would return her to them. Beverly is around 5 miles or so from Marblehead—I wonder if she walked.
7:47 a.m. Walk-in reported hit-and-run on Tedesco Street.
7:53 a.m. After a traffic stop at Devereux and Pleasant streets, driver was given a verbal warning about impeded operation of a vehicle. According to log, “hoarding” in the vehicle prevented man from unbuckling his seatbelt.
11:01 a.m. Caller on Pearl Street reported her car had been broken into a while ago and a bright yellow leather golf-ball bag, holding three balls, had been taken, along with a pair of very cheap binoculars. She was hoping that she could retrieve the ball bag, now that police had made an arrest, but the ball bag was not among the items police had recovered.

11:30 a.m. Trespassing vehicles towed from Village Plaza.
12:36 p.m. Caller on West Shore Drive reported that vehicle headed outbound almost ran down a group of kids. Vehicle could not be located.
5:27 p.m. Investigated suspicious activity reported in Seaside Park. Person could not be located.
6:26 p.m. Walk-in reported that a neighbor had swerved his vehicle at him last Friday morning after having had a disagreement with him the night before. Report was taken.
7:54 p.m. Caller on Washington Street reported disturbance. Officer found that carpet cleaner was just finishing up for the night.
10:22 p.m.Walk-in reported having been punched in the face about two weeks earlier. Man asked about restraining order, which he wasn’t eligible for, and he was advised of his legal options. After receiving advice, man decided not to take action for now.
Good call on his part, I think.
